Bodhrán (🤔bow-ron) I love these drums... I'm still learning, but started with a tipper (bodhrán stick) and an old pizza box in the '90s during my time with the band IONA. Band-mate Troy Donockley was a great encouragement. Troy plays Uilleanm pipes, low whistles and guitar with Nightwish. Years later I joined Troy playing bodhrán with Tolga Kashif, Leslie Garrett and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Barbara Dickson, Maddy Prior and with Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds. I've also played bodhrán on loads of artist sessions including for John Paul Jones 'The Thunderthief' album, Bryn Terfel 'World in Union', Eden's Bridge, Wendell Kimbrough, Elizabeth McGovern albums and my own releases too.

T'was Feb 2002... Pics by James Cumpsy for a Rhythm Magazine feature. I had been out touring 'The Thunderthief' album, that I'd recorded for John Paul Jones (Led Zep) and was also doing regular sessions for legendary UK producer Steve Levine (included in the shots). The drum featured is my toforan, I designed and made by David Nuttal of Jalapeno custom drums... but what I love most seeing these again are the shots of my then 3.5 yr old son who jumped in. Thank you James for the reminder ✌️🪇

Something happens when you hold the groove, just hold it, don't change it, don't get clever, push the need to get clever away, keep it simple and just hold the groove for 20 mins or more if possible. Push on past every distraction and stay in the groove. It's special. Try it, it'll change you as a drummer.
I was taught this by an Amazonian tribal drummer that I met in California in my early twenties. Deforestation had taken his family's home away and he'd escaped to America. He was quite a character. I'm forever grateful to him.

After Spain it was USA with the Martin Barre Band for a week. Here's a quick snapshot.
Great to see friendly faces each night amongst the Tull following. Martin is a force and everyone gave their all, powering through. We played Annapolis, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Sellersville and Patchogue. It was pretty much gig, sleep, travel, repeat followed by an early departure from NY for 24 hrs of travel to Sardinia, where we are now for a couple of days catching our breath before the last 4 Italy shows of this tour.
Tomorrow (26th) we play the Narcao Blues festival. Sending best to all. 🥁✌️

I got to try out all these incredible Ludwig snare drums - a collection available at a new state of the art studio under construction 1 hour from Bratislava. Not this room. it will include 5* accommodation, restaurant, pool and wellness centre. And brewery!!
I will definitely be producing projects here as soon as it's up and running. I can't wait.

Dressed up to ride... though I didn't get to participate in the coolest motorcycle gathering for this year's @gentlemansride.
However last year, I had a total blast riding out on Edna (my RE Bullet) on a beautiful May day with thousands of others all polished and dappered up to raise funding for men's health. In particular prostate cancer awareness. You helped me raise over £800! West Sussex this year raised over £33k. Brilliant!
It means a lot to me and is not forgotten. Some know I went through treatment for PC back in 2016. Every cancer diagnosis is flippin' terrible, so raising awareness, supporting friends and getting the right treatment advice is crucial. So, chaps over 50, go get your PSA tested. Do it once a year. if you don't know what that is, just ask the doc. And get on to it. Stay safe, ride safe. 😍 x

I've been doing this for over 25 years now and count it a real honour to share my stories of adventure and faith with drums. A few snaps with @martinbarreofficial on @cruisetotheedge Miami to Cozumel across the Gulf of Mexico, where we stopped briefly and then back, all to a soundtrack of intense prog-tastic shredding and ballistic odd-meters.There were some incredible performances and t'was fun, especially hanging with friends, old and new. We then flew diagonally across the country to Seattle for dates down the West coast.

The penultimate show in London last night. Barbara was on fire and the Cadogan Hall was full. So lovely to have family and special friends in to see us too. We've travelled to towns from Inverness to London for Barbara's farewell tour... and now heading back up to Manchester for the very last one tomorrow night. What a tremendous experience.

It was so great to see my dear old bass friend and monster bass player Eddie Branch in Birmingham the other day. We laughed, shared memories and Ed gave me some pics. We were Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy's rhythm section for the 'Hundred Men' alongside Paul Statham (keys/gtr) and Peter Bonas (gtr) during his most successful years in the 80s early 90s. The 1st group picture shows 'The Hundred Men' L-R me, Paul Statham, Peter Bonas, Eddie Branch. 2nd me and Ed, the last with Peter Murphy centre.
